Student Policies

STUDENT EVALUATION

Some core course chairs also submit narrative evaluations of student performance, that are kept in the students' files in the Office of Student Affairs. Senior clinical electives are also graded on an Honors/Pass/Fail system. The Honors grade is used to acknowledge students who have demonstrated superior academic performance. Preclinical elective courses are graded on a Pass/Fail system, also with narrative evaluations. The narrative descriptions of performance serve to inform students of their accomplishment in the course and also they are used in constructing the "Dean's Letter," a summary of medical school performances that endorses students' applications for residency and other positions. Evaluations are available only to the student, the students advisor, and the associate dean for curriculum and student affairs. Only the student may permit others to have access to them.

The School of Medicine does not rank its students (e.g., neither the Honors grade nor any of the other forms of evaluation of student performance are used to rank the class numerically). UCSD School of Medicine does not have an Alpha Omega Alpha Chapter.

REQUIREMENTS FOR GRADUATION FROM UCSD SCHOOL OF MEDICINE

In order to graduate, the faculty has determined that each student must:

  1. pass all courses in the "School of Medicine" series (the pre-clinical core courses)
  2. pass Step I of the United States Medical Licensing Examination
  3. pass all clinical core courses
  4. pass Step II of the United States Medical Licensing Examination

Further requirements exist for California State Licensure. A copy of those requirements may be obtained from the Office of Student Affairs, School of Medicine.

*UCSD School of Medicine employs an Honors/Pass/Fail grading system for all required courses.

TIME LIMITATIONS

Normative time to complete the M.D. requirements is four years. The maximum time allowed to a student to complete the M.D. requirements is six years.

Students must progress to the third year of the curriculum (complete all pre-clinical requirements and the USMLE, Step I) within a four-year period. Moreover, the course work in each year may not be repeated more than once. A leave of up to one year may be granted by the Dean of Students; time spent on approved leave may not count toward the above mentioned time limitations. Leaves may be granted for several reasons, including pursuing academic interests or for childbirth, adoption and/or child care. A copy of the full Policy on M.D. Time Limits may be obtained from the Office of Student Affairs, School of Medicine.

STUDENT CONDUCT AND DISCIPLINE

Students enrolling in the university assume an obligation to conduct themselves in a manner compatible with the university's function as an educational institution. Rules concerning student conduct, student organizations, use of university facilities, and related matters are set forth in both university policies and campus regulations. [Particular attention is called to the booklet University of California Policies Relating to Students and Student-Organizations, Use of University Facilities and Non-Discrimination and to the standard of conduct set forth therein.] Copies of these policies and regulations are available upon request from the Office of Student Affairs, School of Medicine, as is a statement on The Rights and Privileges of Students at UCSD School of Medicine.

ACCESSIBILITY AND CONFIDENTIALITY OF STUDENT RECORDS

Pursuant to the Federal Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act of the State of California Education Code and University Policy, a student at the university has the right:

  1. to inspect and review education records directly related to him/her (in capacity as a student that are held by any unit or department on the campus within a reasonable period of time, but no more than forty-five days after a request has been made)
  2. to seek correction of his/her student records; students shall have an opportunity for a hearing to challenge the content of the records to ensure the records are not inaccurate or misleading, or otherwise in violation of their privacy or other rights, and to provide an opportunity for the correction or deletion of any such inaccurate, misleading information; and, subsequent to a hearing, should the UCSD Officials decide that the information is not misleading, or otherwise in violation of the privacy or other rights of the student, the student may insert into the Records Statement a comment or reason for disagreeing with the decision to leave the records unchanged

STUDENT HEALTH SERVICE

The UCSD Campus Student Health Service has been designated as the primary source of health care for medical students. The Health Service assists students in maintaining their well-being for maximum scholastic achievement. Outpatient care is available at the Student Health Center in the Administrative Complex. Students are encouraged to establish and continue a professional relationship with a staff physician at the center; as the need arises, appointments may be made for confidential discussions of any physical or emotional concern. There is no additional fee for basic physician or nursing services received at the Student Health Service, beyond the fee included in the UCSD registration fee.

UCSD has a mandatory health insurance plan for all graduate students that provides for major medical and hospitalization coverage. Medical students are required either to purchase this insurance or demonstrate that they possess comparable major medical and hospitalization insurance of their own. The premium for this policy is $1086/year. UCSD also has a mandatory disability insurance plan that provides a basic income for a student who becomes disabled while enrolled. The premium for this policy is approximately $65/year. A detailed policy description can be obtained from the Student Health Center or from the Office of Student Affairs in the School of Medicine.

The School of Medicine has certain health requirements for its students. Before students are permitted to register for classes, they must submit the following: (1) a completed medical history form, (2) record of a recent physical examination performed by a licensed physician, (3) proof of immunity to measles and rubella, (4) documentation of the results of a tuberculin skin test performed within the past six months. Known positive reactors may result in the School waiving the tuberculin skin test but the student must submit evidence of a recent chest X-ray examination. Students should also have completed a primary series of immunizations with diphtheria and tetanus toxoids. A booster dose of combined diphtheria and tetanus toxoids is recommended every ten years. A recombinant hepatitis B vaccine is given to all medical students at no cost.

UCSD CAMPUS SERVICES AND FACILITIES
