Web and Database Application Selection, Development, and Implementation

We work with core course and clerkship faculty, MedEd staff, and medical students to find or create technology-based solutions that are designed to:

  • Increase efficiency.
  • Enhance effectiveness.
  • Complement teaching, learning, and/or operational processes.
  • Achieve pedagogical or organizational goals.

EdCom provides expertise on instructional design, programming, multimedia, database development, server-side configuration, and training. In addition, EdCom maintains a variety of interactive web-based applications (discussion forums and polls, calendars, survey and quiz generators, etc.) that can readily be incorporated into instructional or administrative applications for added value.

EdCom's typical process of application selection, development and implementation:

Step 1 Needs Assessment
Work with clients to specify project requirements
Step 2A Purchase /License
Explore potential commercial applications:

Evaluate each potential commercial product and collaboratively consider: How closely does it satisfy the specification? How well does it work? Is it cost effective?

Provide technical assistance, if demonstrations and/or trial versions of the application are necessary to further this evaluation process.

If a commercial application is selected, then EdCom works with the vendor to ensure the highest levels of technical implementation (including security).
Step 2B Develop
If no commercial application is available:

Work closely with the client to create best, most cost- effective solution possible using EdCom programmers.

Design, develop, test, and debug application (including as needed: database structure, stored procedures, user interface, navigation appropriate for project, web-based data entry, report forms, documentation, etc).

Work with EdCom Database Administrator and IT staff to ensure the highest levels of technical implementation (including security).
Step 3 Implementation

Provide one-on-one training, workshops, and/or help sheets, as need, to ensure successful utilization of system.
Where appropriate, work with the necessary MedEd Offices and applciations to ensure accurate and timely data flow into and out of the new system.

Examples of EdCom-developed Administrative and Curricular applications can be found in the menu on the left side of this page.
