Technical Support Overview

EdCom manages the computing and communications infrastructure for the Division of Medical Education.  Explore the overview paragraphs below or the Tech Support menu on the left, to find detailed information about EdCom's technical services, computing policies and procedures, and instruction resources to facilitate the solving of basic computing and communications problems.

  • Computer Accounts: EdCom issues and manages computer accounts for medical and graduate students enrolled in SOM courses, coordinating those provided by the UCSD campus with those provided by MedEd to facilitate single Username and Password access to all systems. EdCom also supplies MedEd faculty and staff with accounts and appropriate administrative access to MedEd systems.
  • Computer Security: EdCom works with MedEd clients to ensure thal all computers are in compliance with the UCSD Minimum Security Standards. EdCom provides a free download of the Sophos Anti-Virus product for all clients and supplies a Remote Update client to keep computers up-to-date with the latest virus definitions.

  • Diagnostics / Help Desk: EdCom offers an extensive collection of instructional materials within the Tech Support section of this website that are designed to aid users with various aspects of computer set-up and usage.  EdCom also offers a Help Desk (electronic and physical) for problems with the installation and use of required software; diagnosing computer hardware problems, providing consultations, and making referrals for repair services; and providing assistance with connectivity issues related to wireless access, proxy-servers, email, etc.
  • Email: EdCom issues and manages email accounts for MedEd. For our medical students, we offer a FREE web-based email system called MedEd Student Exchange WebOutlook and recommends that students use this system as their primary email option. Unlike some commercial webmail systems, our students do not have storage limits on their accounts. However, if students should choose to use another application, EdCom will forward mail from the @ucsd account to another destination.

  • Personalized Storage: EdCom provides every user with personal storage space on a centralized file server. In addition, EdCom provides users with access to various "shared" drives, the nature of which depend on the user status (role, MedEd office, etc.).

  • Web Hosting: EdCom hosts individual websites for any medical student with a valid account on the MedEd-mail server. Student Organization websites are located on the meded server and require pre-approval from the SOM Office of Student Affairs.

  • Desktop, Classroom, and AV Support: EdCom provides integrated audiovisual and information technology support for MedEd and ensures the quality of the technology infrastructure for all teaching and learning spaces within the School of Medicine, including the MedEd Simulation Center and the Telemedicine Learning Center.  EdCom oversee the technical portions of the student-run podcasting project, including software, hardware, and network set-up. Provide technical staff for troubleshooting, hosting, and account management.
