Student Accounts
Medical Students are automatically issued computer accounts immediately preceding orientation week. These accounts are coordinated by all involved UCSD & SOM offices to ensure students have a single Username and Password across all systems. Once issued, the Username is changable only under rare circumstances, but you can (and should) change your Password frequently using the MedEd Global Password Change utility - currently being updated to comply with the Campus Systems' new protocols (should be available in Fall Quarter).
UCSD Accounts coordinated by Academic Computing Services (ACS)
- A UCSD Network Account that comes with:
- A UCSD Network Username (see the Glossary or Email Terminology Helpsheet for more information),
- A campus email account with an email alias, [ie., the "@ucsd.edu" email address],
- Web proxy authentication when off campus for access to restricted UCSD resources (e.g., e-reserves and library databases),
- Wireless authentication for using the campus WiFi network, and
- ResNet authentication for internet access in campus residence halls.
- An Active Directory Account (AD) that provides centralized authentication and resource management across UCSD. The AD account provides:
- Access to campus productivity applications while studying at the Biomedical and Medical Center libraries,
- Access to the MedEd network storage area and shared student directories from general campus computers, and
- Authentication for selected Medical Center information systems.
Configure a web browser for proxy access - EdCom Documentation for the UCSD Web Proxy Server

SOM accounts issued by EdCom include:
- MedEd Username (which is typically the same as the UCSD Network Username).
- MedEd Student Web Portal Account that provides access to integrated medical school web resources:
- SOM course websites,
- Calendars of academic & social activities,
- Electronic discussion forums,
- Contact information,
- Various databases, electronic resources, and handbooks.
- MedEd Email Account - accessible from any of the publicly available computers with internet access and a World Wide Web browser.
- Students may arrange for email to be forwarded from their UCSD account to another email address.
- Please refer to the Tech Support- Email Overview section of this website for more informaiton.
- MedEd Novell Account - provides access to:
- Productivity software,
- Shared student directories (P: & S: drives that include medical applications such as BrainStorm), and
- Personal file storage on the "I: drive" of the MedEd Novell server. There are no formal limitations on file storage. However, EdCom routinely monitors to ensure that there are no excesses or abuses. See the Tech Support - Remote Access section of this site for directions for remotely accessing the Novell server from home.
Note: Students will also be issued an account on the CourseEval System (by the MedEd Office of Educational Development & Evaluation). While this account is separate from those listed above, it has been synchronized to have the same username and password as your other accounts.
SOM Grad & SSPPS Students
Other SOM graduate groups and SSPPS students are provided with EdCom-issued accounts as requested by the programs and not by individual students. Web proxy server and wireless access can be acquired through the links above. Other individuals seeking access to MedEd electronic resources should contact the EdCom Office during business hours or submit a request through the Help Desk.
