Student Email Overview

EdCom provides every medical student with an email account on our MedEd Student Exchange system. The MedEd Student Exchange system serves as a global "Post Office" for your email, contacts, and calendaring  and is acessible through the web, desktop clients, and/or handheld devices.  Both incoming and outgoing messages are saved on the server, so this can be handy when accessing files while at school or studying away from home.

EdCom provides a free and convenient WebOutlook interface to all medical students for viewing email from their MedEd Student Exchange account.  This web-based program includes a calendar and a personal address book which travels with you each time you log into the WebOutlook. If students are checking mail from both home and school, a web interface is the most convenient strategy (because the home and school access settings are the same).

However, if students choose to install an email client on their home computer or laptop, we suggest one of the following:

  • Microsoft Outlook - a client package Included in the Microsoft Office retail package.
  • Microsoft Entourage - a client page similar to Outlook for the Mac users
  • Apple Mail - available on all Macs running OS X
  • Mozilla Thunderbird - available for download from Mozilla on all PCs and MACs
  • Windows Mail - available on all PCs running Windows Vista
If you do install an email client, please pay close attention to the Exchange Proxy Settings section for Outlook 2003 and 2007, as there are configuration issues that change depending on whether you are at home or at school.

Email Policies

Email is the normal means of communication among the School of Medicine's students, faculty, and administration.  Students are accountable for information in email messages that have been sent to them by UCSD faculty and staff. It is therefore expected that every student will check his or her email regularly and frequently - daily is highly recommended when courses are in session, but at least every 48 hours (unless on vacation). It is recognized that students who are off-campus at very remote locations may not have reliable internet access, but they are encouraged to take advantage of any opportunities they may have to access email.

Students may arrange for email to be forwarded from their UCSD account to another email address - please refer to the Email Forwarding page of this site for details.

Email use is subject to University of California regulations, described at: http://blink.ucsd.edu/Blink/External/Topics/Policy/0,1162,1489,00.htmlExternal Site / New Window.
